What it is

An answer surface is any place where an answer about your company is rendered to someone who never visits your website. Chat assistants, AI summaries above search results, in-product copilots and third-party comparison pages all qualify. They differ in audience and format but share one structural property: you supply the source material and somebody else controls the rendering.

Why it matters

That property changes the governance problem. On your own site a wrong claim can be edited at the point of display; on most answer surfaces it can only be corrected at the record, and then only once the surface re-reads it — Google warns that a recrawl can take anywhere from several days to several months. Some surfaces are exceptions: Google Business Profile lets an owner manage how their business shows up on Google Search and Maps, and preview controls such as nosnippet let a publisher limit what Google shows, though suppressing a claim is not the same as correcting it. Reporting is a third thing again: Google's Search Help documents a Report a problem option on AI Overviews, but it is addressed to the person reading the overview rather than to the company described, and Google frames it as feedback that helps improve the feature rather than a commitment to fix the answer. Those owner-facing channels are surface-specific and most surfaces offer none, so the accuracy of the underlying claim is the lever that generalises. Knowledge Company works at the record for that reason.
